Join the Crowd who Know the Credit Union Difference!

If you are a member of a credit union, you belong to an institution that is unique in the financial world. The credit union idea was born in 1849 when the mayor of a small village in Germany wanted to help his people recover from the physical and financial devastation caused by the Napoleonic wars. His plan was for people to pool their small but regular savings and give out low interest loans. The plan worked well and the idea quickly caught on and spread across Europe. The United States saw its first credit union established in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1909. It was based on the same principle of pooled savings and low interest loans.

Membership makes credit unions unique and special. You may have thought because credit unions provide many of the same services as other financial institutions, that the only difference is the name. Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are owned and run by its members. No one person or organization can own a credit union. Members make up the Board of Directors, who set policies. Members make up the Credit committee who evaluate loans and credit procedures. Members make up the Supervisory Committee who review and insure the proper operating procedures. As a result, a credit union exists solely to provide members with a safe, convenient place to save and to obtain loans at reasonable rates, and to provide other needed services.

Credit unions are not for profit organizations. Earnings from a credit union are returned to members in the form of higher dividends, lower loan rates, fewer and lower fees. In other words, Credit unions were formed not for profit, but for service! According to a nationwide surveys conducted by the American Banker newspaper, Credit unions have been rated tops in service every year for over 20 years.

Credit unions were formed to help people, help other people. The credit union difference is the member/owner.
